Kokusai Shorinjiryu Karatedo Championship Tournament

Finland Shorinjiryu Karatedo Association organizes Kokusai Shorinjiryu Karatedo Championship Tournament every year. The Tournament is usually held in fall.

Championship Tournament - Adults

Adults are competing in kata and boogutsuki kumite.

Kata Competition

Kata means a series of techniques done against imaginary opponents. At the Tournament two competitors do the same kata at the same time, and the judges decide which one did it better.

Kumite Competition

Adults (over 18 years of age) compete in boogutsuki kumite. The competitors use a personal protection: gloves, a chest guard, a helmet, mouth guards, shin protection, and men also lower guards. By using the personal protection it is possible to safely compete with harder contact.

Points are awarded for hard enough contact only. For safety reasons it is forbidden to attack on a fallen opponent with a kick, to attack outside of the protected areas of the body (such as back, or back of the head), sumo wrestling and tackling, and other dangerous movements. It is also forbidden to exit the competition area (from third time the opponent is given a waza-ari), turning the back on the opponent, cursing or insulting the opponent, pushing the opponent outside of the competition area, and also to back away on purpose after scoring a waza-ari in attempt to lose time. The competition is held as Ippon shobu, which means that the competitor who scores Ippon first is the winner.

Championship Tournament - Youth competition

At the youh competition the participants are competing in kata and in clothes peg kumite. They can also compete with a pair in Yakusoku kumite and in Ippon kumite competitions.

Kata Competition

Kata means a series of techniques done against imaginary opponents. At the Tournament two competitors do the same kata at the same time, and the judges decide which one did it better.

Clothes peg Kumite

In Clothes peg kumite four (4) clothes pegs are attached to karate gi: two in front of the shoulders, one in the back and one in the middle of the belly. The competitor tries to grab a clothes peg from the opponent and tries to hold on to it. Less points are given if the clothes peg is dropped.

Competition time is 2 minutes. The one who scored more points is the winner.

Yakusoku Kumite

Yakusoku kumite are pair techniques that typically have one basic attack, most often shikodachi oizuki, to which the pair makes a counter technique. Kokusai Shorinjiyu Karatedo has 37 Yakusoku kumite techniques in total. At the tournament the lower belts usually do Yakusoku kumite 1-10, and the higher belts do 1-20.

At the Tournament two pairs do the same Yakusoku kumite technique at the same time, and the judges decide which one of the pairs did it better.

Ippon Kumite

Ippon Kumite are applied sparring techniques. There are 3 different Ippon Kumite techniques at Kokusai Shorinjiryu karatedo. At the tournament the lower belts usually do number 1 technique, and the higher belts do all three. The competitors use a personal protection: gloves, a chest guard and a shin protection.

At the Tournament two pairs do the same Ippon kumite technique at the same time, and the judges decide which one of the pairs did it better.
